ISRAEL: Religion everywhere
Submitted by: MarilynLeff, December 20th, 2009 Topic:
Religion is the opiate of the masses, Karl Marx said. That might be true in some places, but in Israel, this drug induces dangerous hyperactivity. Always a scratch-of-the-surface away, religion is an emotional factor in conflict - between Israel and the Palestinians, between Israelis and themselves.

The official title of Colonel Brett Oxman is not "military rabbi," but rather "chaplain," and he's officially assigned to the United States Strategic Command. The number of Jews currently serving in the U.S. military is estimated to be between 10,000 and 14,000, but only about 4,600 identify themselves as Jews; most are not religiously observant, and prefer not to stand out too much. Some report being subjected to religious pressure to convert by their fellow, Christian servicemen. At one California base, when I asked to speak to a Jewish soldier, a young black man showed up and declared himself to be the only Jew there. He turned out to be a Messianic Jew.
The Mask of the Marranos

The creation of the modern state of Israel has awakened many dormant cultural pursuits, perhaps none so dramatic as the discovery of long-lost Jews. Every decade or so, another tribe of supposed descendants of biblical Israel—marked by quirky uses of Jewish symbols, eclectic religious observance, and a smattering of Hebrew prayers—is revealed to have been keeping the flame in some remote area of the world, from Africa to the subcontinent. The repatriation to Israel of members of these remnants of the long Jewish exile—from the Bene Israel of India to the Falasha of Ethiopia and the Lemba of South Africa—has been among the most inspiring aspects of the modern “ingathering of the exiles” that has animated the Zionist idea. 2 comments

Rich Maisel was your typical Jewish teenager growing up on New York's Long Island in the early 1980s. He had a strong Jewish identity, was a supporter of Israel, and was active in many Jewish social causes. Torah observance, though, wasn't really part of the equation.

Napoleon said, "I know men and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between Him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creation of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men...
The World is a Dangerous Place for Jews
Submitted by: ksas, October 9th, 2008 Topic: Israel Forums
The world has always been a dangerous place in which to be a Jew. The climax of modern era anti-Semitism came during my lifetime in the last century with the Nazi Holocaust, the wholesale effort to kill every Jew, man, woman and child in Europe, with the "Final Solution." It promises to repeat itself if Iran is permitted to obtain nuclear weapons.
