The Believer & the Law of Moses

For the Jewish believer, however, the Law of Moses can provide a Biblical means of expressing their God‑given Jewish identity which, in turn, provides a universal testimony of God's faithfulness. For Gentile believers, the Law of Moses may provide opportunities to discover & enjoy the roots of their redemption and to identify with the Jewish community for the purpose of revealing the riches of Messiah.

- The official title of Colonel Brett Oxman is not "military rabbi," but rather "chaplain," and he's officially assigned to the United States Strategic Command. The number of Jews currently serving in the U.S. military is estimated to be between 10,000 and 14,000, but only about 4,600 identify themselves as Jews; most are not religiously observant, and prefer not to stand out too much. Some report being subjected to religious pressure to convert by their fellow, Christian servicemen. At one California base, when I asked to speak to a Jewish soldier, a young black man showed up and declared himself to be the only Jew there. He turned out to be a Messianic Jew.

Israel's anti-Semitic friends
Submitted by: MarilynLeff, November 4th, 2009 Topic: Community Forums - There can be few supporters of the Palestinians, still less anti-Zionists, who haven't, at some time or another, been accused of "anti-Semitism." Accusations that anti-Zionism equals anti-Semitism have become little more than a ritual exercise in defamation. The danger in making such accusations is, to quote the former Director of the Institute of Jewish Policy Research, Antony Lerman, that it "drains the word antisemitism of any useful meaning." Moreover, its purpose is to discourage criticism of Israel and support of the Palestinians or risk being labeled as anti-Semitic. As I wrote two years ago, "If you cry wolf long and loud enough, when anti-Semitism does raise its head no one will bat an eyelid."

More Temple Mount Hijinks
Submitted by: Tzidkenu, October 29th, 2009 Topic: Israel Forums - Bradley Burston, the Ha'aretz columnist, as well as the newly-appointed vice-president for ritual affairs at my one-man island synagogue, forwarded me some dispiriting news. Apparently, a religious genius of some sort has decided that what the Jews need now more than anything is the ability to deliver prayer notes to the top of the Temple Mount, where God will presumably read them, when He's not busy making plans to destroy the Dome of the Rock. According to the website for this new service, the scheme is entirely kosher:

The newly appointed German consul-general to Jerusalem, Herr Walter Doehl, stood at his office window hung with an extravagantly tasseled swastika banner, and gazed with curiosity at the sight of clusters of bearded Jews, all draped in prayer shawls and resplendent in the styles and furs of late-medieval Poland, entering and exiting a ramshackle foliage-thatched booth on the other side of the Street of the Prophets where his legation was situated, each clutching what seemed to him to be a lemon and a palm frond.

The Mask of the Marranos
Submitted by: Messianicmiriam, October 4th, 2009 Topic: Education Forums - The creation of the modern state of Israel has awakened many dormant cultural pursuits, perhaps none so dramatic as the discovery of long-lost Jews. Every decade or so, another tribe of supposed descendants of biblical Israel—marked by quirky uses of Jewish symbols, eclectic religious observance, and a smattering of Hebrew prayers—is revealed to have been keeping the flame in some remote area of the world, from Africa to the subcontinent. The repatriation to Israel of members of these remnants of the long Jewish exile—from the Bene Israel of India to the Falasha of Ethiopia and the Lemba of South Africa—has been among the most inspiring aspects of the modern “ingathering of the exiles” that has animated the Zionist idea. 2 comment(s)

Public Schools’ Praise Song: Next Step Praying to Obama?
Submitted by: MarilynLeff, September 29th, 2009 Topic: Education Forums - It began last year in earnest. But, like a virus far worse than H1N1, it is beginning to spread like wildfire amongst the public school indoctrinators formerly known as “teachers.“ The Obama power grab-supported by his adoring adherents-has just about reached the most monumental proportion of all time. And Dictator-in-Chief Obama may have finally reached the apex of his desires; that of replacing God with himself. Recently, at New Jersey’s B. Bernice Youngs Elementary School, not only were second grade students forced to sing a song of praise to Obama (the parents were not notified that this was occurring) but, Obama’s name was substituted for that of Jesus in the accompanying words and music. After repeated calls by a few of the press, the superintendent of the school system-Christopher Manno-is reported to have issued a statement saying that this specific exercise had not been authorized. Sounds to me as if he’s not really concerned.

Messianic Report Blog w/Don Meecha September 15th 2009
Submitted by: DonMeecha, September 14th, 2009 Topic: - In a short introduction to an E-Blog Series on the Fall Feasts, Dr. Meecha discusses the Biblical Nature of God's Appointed Times and calls on Christianity to acknowledge the necessity of their study and practice. He states, "From the weekly Shabbat and through the cycle of the annual Feasts we should be presenting ourselves before God as a collective community. In truth, the time and place where we meet God is not determined by man, but rather by Him and we can only discover these meeting times through the study of the Feasts. Therefore, by their very nature they are the Theological foundation of our common faith. For in them we discover, through types and shadows, the Person of Messiah."

Should Circumcision Become Public Health Policy?
Submitted by: Honeyleft, September 2nd, 2009 Topic: Community Forums - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention caused quite a stir last week when word slipped out that the agency was considering, for the first time, making public health recommendations concerning circumcision. In terms of a woman's health, circumcision makes sense because it lowers a man's risk of getting infected with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases and, thus, decreases his likelihood of transmitting them to his female partner. That's probably why the editorial board of the San Francisco Chronicle has come out supporting recommendations, expected to be issued by the CDC next year, in favor of circumcision to "curb the spread of HIV and other infections." But those vehemently opposed to circumcision who call themselves "intactivists" have expressed outrage that the government is thinking about recommending that all newborn boys be circumcised. They contend it's a form of mutilation that destroys a man's ability to fully experience sexual pleasure.

A My Turns Article
I see stories in people. In every observation and exchange, I'm looking for the stories that make them who they are. If I can hear the stories that create you, sustain you, and shape you, then I can know you. I am trained in narrative ethnography, in participating in people's stories, in observing the way they tell about their experiences, and in creating a written account of what I've seen. I understand and embrace the idea that narrative allows us to better appreciate and comprehend those we share our world with. This is the framework that accompanies me on my life's travels, and it is the framework I took with me when I embarked upon an odyssey that would profoundly impact me: my two year ethnography of Dalet Shalom, a Messianic Jewish congregation.

Should We Celebrate Christmas?
Submitted by: Ahava, December 4th, 2008 Topic: Messianic Forums - Today, Christmas is a very popular holiday. However, as is often the case, what is popular is not always right and what is right is not always popular. Christmas means 'mass for Christ'. The name of the holiday is much newer than the holiday itself. The customs associated with Christmas, in one form or another, have been celebrated for literally thousands of years. 'Christmas' is just a new name for an old holiday. 1 comment(s)

Shavuot (Pentecost)
Submitted by: Eliyahu, June 25th, 2008 Topic: Messianic Forums - It is interesting to note that the Old and New covenant were both cut on the same day "Shavuot." On Mount Sinai the Law was written on stone tables, Moses came down the mountain, there was a fight between the worshipers and the Levites and about 3,000 fell. On Shavuot the same day 1,500 years later the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) fell on the 120 in the upper room and the Body of Messiah (Assembly) was born. That day the law was written on the hearts of men (not on stone tablets) and about 3,000 were saved.
