Holocaust Memorial Day

Today, May 1st, mark the Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel. For a long 2 minutes, a piercing siren could be heard throughout the country as all people stopped what they were doing to stand in silence in remembrance of 6 million Jews who lost their lives to the Nazi regime.

Today at the Warsaw Ghetto memorial in Yad Vashem, the offical state wreath-laying ceremony took place as the 6 million victim names were read aloud.

Present at the ceremony, President Olmert commented, "Even 60 years later, who would have believed that the ugly head of Jew hatred and Israel hatred would still be rearing all over the world; still inciting, poisoning and enticing. There is no force in the world stronger than the spirit of this people, that emerged from the abyss of annihilation to the summits of creation, success, building and might of the State of Israel."

This Remembrance Day ceremony comes just after the Hamas released a documentary claiming  there is "historical" proof that the "satonic Jews" planned and executed the Holocaust to get rid of the burden of the disabled and handicapped Jews. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, while speaking last in at the American Columbia University, denies the Holocaust even happened. He claimed it was a "myth", and the German prime minister stood up for the Jewish people, calling his statements "shocking and unacceptable."

March of the Living

On this annual day of Remembrace, thousands walk from Auschwitz to Birkenau, symbolizing the "death marches" that the Nazis forced prisoners to make across Europe under unbearably harsh conditions. This international annual March of the Living began in 1988 and was attended by a record 9,000 people last year in 2007.
