Root of Jesse

Was Yeshua really born from Jesse’s family tree? Is it true that Joseph was from Jesse’s lineage, and because Yeshua was born of the virgin Mary, Yeshua truly wasn’t from the root of Jesse? Do Jewish people still trace family lineage? Where are the descendents from Jesse’s family today?

The Root of Jesse refers to Isaiah’s prophecy in which the Messiah is to come from Jesse’s family lineage through his son, David, who is to be king in Jerusalem. Commonly known as the Tree of Jesse, Yeshua’s family genealogy is often depicted as art in Christianity, specifically during the Medieval period. The Gospel of Matthew begin with the description of Yeshua’s family tree, "The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, son of Abraham…"

In the Old Covenant

"A shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit… And in that day the nations will resort to the root of Jesse, who will stand as a signal for the peoples; and His resting place will be glorious."
- Isaiah 11:1-10

In the New Covenant

"After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’ From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus."
- Acts 13:22-23
